The Checkers’ blue line is getting a boost as the Carolina Hurricanes have assigned defenseman Ryan Murphy to Charlotte.

The third-year-pro rejoins the Checkers after his most recent recall on Jan. 31, were he was tapped to fill the hole left in the Hurricanes’ roster after Brett Pesce was placed on IR. Murphy appeared in one game during his stint, serving as a healthy extra for the other two contests.

Murphy could bring a much needed spark to the Checkers, as he has 14 points in 22 games this season for Charlotte, including five points in his last four contests before the recall. His addition gives the Checkers seven options on defense, though Mike Cornell’s status is unknown after he left Saturday’s game with an injury and did not return.

The Checkers return to action tonight against the San Antonio Rampage, kicking off a four-game week.
