Valentin Zykov, Nicolas Roy and Aleksi Saarela have all been assigned to the Checkers, while Trevor Carrick, Jake Chelios and Jeremy Smith have been placed on waivers. Should they clear Friday at noon, they will be assigned to Charlotte as well.

UPDATE: all those on waivers cleared and have joined the Checkers.

The six players will not travel with the team as the Checkers head to Lehigh Valley for a pair of preseason contests on Friday and Saturday.

In addition, the Checkers have cut three players from their training camp roster – goalie Martin Ouellette, defenseman Josiah Didier and forward Brett Bulmer. Ouellette and Didier, both of whom signed AHL contracts with Charlotte this past offseason, are being assigned to the ECHL’s Florida Everblades, while Brett Bulmer has been released from his tryout.

With those moves, the Checkers are taking 14 forwards to the preseason series with the Phantoms – Warren Foegele, Andrew Poturalski, Andrew Miller, Sergey Tolchinsky, Clark Bishop, Julien Gauthier, Zack Stortini, Mitchell Heard, Patrick Brown, Steven Lorentz, Mike Ferrantino, Spencer Smallman, Nick Schilkey and training camp invite Justin Kea – eight defensemen – Josh Wesley, Tyler Ganly, Philip Samulesson, Roland McKeown, Dennis Robertson, Keegan Kanzig, Matt Finn and Brenden Kichton – and two netminder – Alex Nedeljkovic and Callum Booth.
