The Hurricanes made their final cuts before the start of the regular season today, assigning three players to the Checkers.

Forward Lucas Wallmark and defensemen Trevor Carrick and Haydn Fleury are all heading to Charlotte.

Wallmark will begin his first season in North America after being drafted in the fourth round in 2014. The 21-year-old Swede has four professional seasons in his home country under his belt, with the majority of his games coming in Sweden’s top league. Wallmark led Lulea HF in assists and was tied for second in scoring last season before going on to have a breakout postseason that saw him lead the team in goals.

Carrick returns to Charlotte for his third pro season after a big year with the Checkers. The 22-year-old, who was selected to the AHL All-Star Classic, marked the third-highest single-season point total by a defenseman with 42, which was good enough to tie him for eighth among league blueliners.

Fleury comes to the Checkers ready to kick off his rookie season after a five-year WHL career with Red Deer. The 7th overall selection in the 2014 NHL Draft, Fleury appeared in one game with Charlotte at the tail-end of the 2014-15 season, lighting the lamp in his lone pro contest.

In a corresponding transaction, the Checkers have assigned forward Mike Ferrantino and goalie Daniel Altshuller to the Florida Everblades and released forwards Mike Kirkpatrick and John McCarron from the tryouts.
