The Charlotte Checkers today announced that they have signed goaltender Justin Fazio to an amateur tryout contract. He is expected to back up Daniel Altshuller for tonight’s 7 p.m. game in Grand Rapids as Tom McCollum will not be available due to personal reasons.

Fazio, 19, recently completed his third full campaign with the Ontario Hockey League’s Sarnia Sting, where he went 23-20-1 with a 3.68 goals-against average and .896 save percentage while appearing in 52 of the team’s 68 games this season. The undrafted native of Sarnia, Ontario, also appeared in two playoff games for his hometown team, which lost its first-round series against top-seeded Erie on Wednesday.

In 125 career OHL games with Sarnia, Fazio (6-foot-1, 188 pounds), holds a 55-51-10 record, 3.43 goals-against average, .892 save percentage and four shutouts.

Tonight’s game continues a four-game road trip for the Checkers, who defeated Cleveland 4-1 on Thursday to move back into playoff position with nine games to play.
