After extending him a qualifying offer yesterday, the Hurricanes have agreed to terms on a new one-year, two-way contract with defenseman Jake Chelios.

Chelios earned his first NHL contract last summer after an impressive debut campaign with the Checkers and continued his rise this past season. The 26-year-old led all Charlotte blue liners with a career-best 32 points and ranked third on the team overall in assists with 28, another career high.

The undrafted Chelios served as an alternate captain for the Checkers for the majority of last season, as well as donning the captain’s C for a stint while Patrick Brown was in the NHL.
