Patrick Brown
The Checkers’ captain is staying with the organization as Patrick Brown has inked a one-year, two-way contract with the Hurricanes.

The 26-year-old is heading into his fifth pro season, having compiled 90 points (34g, 56a) in 264 AHL games with the Checkers. Brown, who has worn a letter for Charlotte in each of the last three seasons, is coming off a season in which he notched a career-high 20 helpers and finished one shy of his best point output.

“Patrick served as captain in Charlotte again last season and was the heart and soul of the team,” Don Waddell, the Hurricanes' president and general manager, said in a team release. “He is a tremendous leader on and off the ice and is a reliable, hard-working player. We are excited to keep him in the organization again next season.”

Brown, an undrafted product of Boston College, is the second NHL free agent from last season’s Checkers team to agree to a new deal with Carolina, joining Trevor Carrick.
