After losing several players in the last few days to injuries and trades, the Hurricanes have recalled Andrej Nestrasil and Patrick Brown from Charlotte to help fill those holes.

After a slow start to his NHL season, Nestrasil was sent to Charlotte in early January. He then started to find his groove during his stint with the Checkers, recording 10 points (4g, 6a) in 18 games. Nestrasil now returns to Carolina, where he has logged 18 games this season and notched five points (1g, 4a).

For Brown, this marks his first NHL recall of the season. The third-year pro, who has been serving as the Checkers captain for the majority of the season since Derek Ryan departed for the NHL, is in the midst of another career year in Charlotte. Brown’s 11 goals rank fourth on the team, just two shy of his career high, and he has racked up five in his last 10 games. His 20 points through 54 games also put him five away from his 70-game total a year ago. The 24-year-old undrafted product of Boston College has logged seven NHL games in each of his first two seasons, coming up with a goal and an assist across those 14 contests.

With those two pieces out and only 12 options up front, the Checkers are expected to draw Sergey Tolchinsky and Erik Karlsson back into the lineup for tonight’s tilt against Milwaukee.

In addition, the Hurricanes have assigned Phil Di Giuseppe to Charlotte, but only on paper, as he will remain with Carolina. The AHL has a rule that states that any player not on an AHL roster at 3 p.m. today will not be eligible to join the team going forward. Therefore, Di Giuseppe will be the only player currently on the Hurricanes’ roster available to join the Checkers for the home stretch of the season and, if they make it, the playoffs.
