Forest gets his wheels

The Checkers, in conjunction with Wheels for Forest, surprised a local teen’s family with a new van during the first intermission of their home game on April 7. The van was donated by Hendrick Automotive Group and will be fitted for handicap accessibility by the Checkers and Van Products, a Raleigh-based company who provides mobility to physically challenged individuals. Sanguinetti named Checkers' Man of the Year

The Charlotte Checkers are proud to announce that Bobby Sanguinetti has been named the team’s winner of the IOA/American Specialty AHL Man of the Year award for his outstanding contributions to the Charlotte community during the 2011-12 season. Read more

Seventh annual Heroes Game a success

The seventh annual Salute to Heroes, presented by American Airlines, was held on March 11 when the Checkers hosted the Chicago Wolves at Time Warner Cable Arena. The event raised more than $23,000 for families of fallen public service workers. Read more

Charity game raises $6,700 for United Way

Prior to the game on March 11, the Checkers hosted a charity game between employees of Wells Fargo and US Airways to benefit the United Way of Central Carolinas. In all, $6,700 was raised from a portion of ticket sales proceeds, a silent auction and proceeds from Chuck-A-Puck. Read more
 

Checkers in the Community: February

Despite playing just three home games during the month, the team raised more than $60,000 for local non-profit organizations at events such as the sixth annual Pink in the Rink, Hockey Fights Cancer Night, the inaugural Meat N’ Greet charity banquet and the Checkers’ and Cannon School’s “Heroes for Houses” fundraiser. Weekend to remember raises $42,000 for charity

The sixth annual Pink in the Rink, presented by Presbyterian Hospital, drew a single-game Checkers record of 13,102 fans, with a weekend record of more than 25,000 packing into Time Warner Cable Arena over the two-game set. On the ice, the Checkers earned three of a possible four points, with various fundraising efforts combining to raise more than $42,000 for charity. Read more

More than $8,900 raised at Meat 'N Greet at Chima

Chima Brazilian Steakhouse in Uptown Charlotte was the venue for the inaugural Meat 'N Greet charity banquet and silent auction on Feb. 21. More than 100 Checkers fans, staff and players attended and the event, which raised more than $8,900 for the Charlotte Checkers Charitable Foundation. Read more

Despite playing a season-high 13 games in the month of January, the Checkers continued their giving ways with several community appearances and charitable initiatives, including school and youth hockey appearances, a checkers tournament for charity and the annual teddy bear delivery to Presbyterian Hemby Children’s Hospital. Checkers with the Checkers raises over $5,000 for charity

The Checkers and 106.5 The END held the inaugural Checkers with the Checkers charity event Friday at Buffalo Wild Wings and raised $5,344 for Hayden’s Hope, a local extension of the Children’s Organ Transplant Association. Read more

Checkers players Justin Soryal, Zac Dalpe, Riley Nash, Chris Murray and Justin Shugg faced off against coach Jim Luce’s Junior Checkers in front of a raucous crowd at the grounds of the NASCAR Hall of Fame. More Than 3,200 Bears Collected for Hemby Children's Hospital

More than 3,200 teddy bears were collected during the Checkers game on Sunday, Dec. 4, as part of  the team's annual Teddy Bear Toss. Jon Matsumoto scored the opening goal, which triggered the promotion and resulted in stuffed animals raining down onto the ice from all angles. Read more

Checkers Raise $5,000 for Movember

More Than 2,200 Items Collected for Troops

On Sunday, Nov. 20, the Checkers held Military Appreciation Day, presented by Goodrich Corporation, and asked fans to bring travel-sized personal items to donate to the USO of North Carolina. More than 500 items were donated, including deodorant, shampoo, toothbrushes, toothpaste, razors and more. Read more

Hemby Cup Raises More Than $100,000

This year’s Hemby Cup charity game and youth tournament raised $102,000 for Presbyterian Hemby Children’s Hospital through ticket sales, donations and a post-game jersey auction. More than 500 fundraising tickets were sold. Read more
