Andersson joined the Checkers as an assistant on incoming head coach Ulf Samuelsson's staff in June of 2016. The native of Federtalve, Sweden, previously served as an assistant coach to Samuelsson with MODO of the Swedish Hockey League (SHL) for two seasons (2011-12 and 2012-13), and most recently was an assistant coach for HC Lugano of the Swiss National League.

As a player, Andersson pent three seasons in the NHL from 1983-84 to 1985-86, scoring 10 goals and earning 41 assists in 172 career regular-season games with Washington and Quebec. The Capitals drafted Andersson, a defenseman, in the ninth round, 173rd overall, in the 1980 NHL Entry Draft. He also played for Bjorkloven of the SHL and other European teams during his playing career.
