Charlotte Checkers Science of Hockey
The Charlotte Checkers’ Science of Hockey program, presented by Piedmont Natural Gas, recently kicked off at Marvin Elementary.

Presented by Piedmont Natural Gas
As part of the presentation, Checkers staff demonstrated to fourth and fifth grade students how science concepts learned in the classroom, including the changing states of water, transfer of energy, force and more, apply to the game of hockey. Real-life examples included everything from shooting and passing to ice resurfacing methods.

Following an instructional video, students conducted an experiment on force and friction, where they applied their knowledge to make predictions, conclusions and solve for averages.

The Science of Hockey program, which visits several local schools each season, reached more than 2,000 students last season. As part of the program, teachers receive a full packet of the information covered in the presentation and extended learning material that they can choose to hand out to the students for an extra in class assignment or homework.
