The Hurricanes swung a deal tonight that could affect the Checkers, acquiring defenseman Keegan Kanzig from the Calgary Flames.

In return for Kanizg and a sixth-round pick in 2019, Carolina sent Calgary goalie Eddie Lack, defenseman Ryan Murphy and a seventh-round pick in that same draft.

Kanzig, 22, was selected by the Flames in the third round of the 2013 draft. The blue liner, who measures in at a towering six-foot-seven, spent the majority of his rookie campaign last season in the ECHL with the Adirondack Thunder. Kanzig recorded five points (1g, 4a) and 65 penalty minutes in 40 games with the Thunder, as well as appearing in six games and picking up two helpers and 19 penalty minutes with the Stockton Heat. Prior to turning pro, Kanzig put up 59 points (19g, 40a) and 565 penalty minutes in 319 WHL games with the Victoria Royals and Calgary Hitmen.

Murphy, the 12th overall pick in the 2011 draft, appeared in 89 games with the Checkers over his five pro seasons, picking up 66 points (10g, 56a) along the way. Lack joined Charlotte for two games last season as part of a conditioning stint, going 1-1-0 with a 1.50 goals-against average and a .952 save percentage.
