The Carolina Hurricanes placed five players on waivers Wednesday for the purpose of assigning them to Charlotte.

Three of the waived players – forwards Brody Sutter and Brendan Woods and defenseman Keegan Lowe – have spent significant time in Charlotte during recent seasons. Meanwhile, defenseman Matt Tennyson and goaltender Michael Leighton, veterans signed by the Hurricanes prior to this season, would be reporting to Charlotte for the first time.

Due a combination of their age and experience, all five players require waivers – a process that opens the door for other NHL teams to claim their services – in order to join an AHL team. Should they clear, they could be formally assigned to Charlotte at noon on Thursday. Other players not requiring waivers may join them at anytime, should the Hurricanes so choose.

The Checkers’ roster currently stands at 15 players, all of whom have been skating with the team during this week’s training camp. Charlotte plays the only two games of its preseason schedule at Lehigh Valley this Friday and Saturday.
