The Hurricanes have made their first addition for next season, signing forward Saku Maenalanen to a one-year, two-way contract.

The 23-year-old Finn has spent the last five seasons in his home country’s top league, totaling 96 points (43g, 53a) in 192 games. Maenalanen broke out last season for Karpat, tying for 11th in Liiga overall with a career-high 46 points (17g, 29a) in 59 games.

The six-foot-three forward, who was originally picked by Nashville in the fifth round of the 2013 draft, has also represented his country in international play. Maenalanen led the 2014 World Juniors in goals and helped guide Finland to a gold medal alongside current Hurricane Teuvo Teravainen. Most recently, Maenalanen suited up for the 2018 World Championships alongside Teravainen and Sebastian Aho.

Given the two-way nature of his contract, Maenalanen could at least start next season in the AHL with the Checkers.
