Lucas Wallmark
The Carolina Hurricanes’ latest cut will see the Checkers add a pair of offensive weapons, including their top goal scorer from last season.

Center Lucas Wallmark heads back to Charlotte to follow up on a successful rookie campaign that saw him lead the team and rank fourth among AHL rookies with 24 goals last season. The native of Umea, Sweden, also ranked second on the team with 42 points and led all Checkers with six points (3g, 3a) in five playoff games. The Hurricanes have also placed forward Phil Di Giuseppe, who racked up 28 points (12g, 16a) in 40 AHL games last season, on waivers. Should he clear Tuesday at noon he will be assigned to Charlotte as well.

The addition of Wallmark, the AHL’s Rookie of the Month for January 2017, gives Charlotte each of its top five scorers from last season as the team heads into its regular-season opener at Hartford on Friday. Depending on the health of the NHL roster, further additions may yet come to a Checkers team that already had offensive success in the preseason, totaling 13 in back-to-back wins at Lehigh Valley last weekend. If Di Giuseppe joins Charlotte, that would give the Checkers each of their top seven scorers from the 2016-17 campaign.

Wallmark, the Hurricanes’ fourth-round draft choice in 2014, scored two goals in four preseason games with Carolina, while Di Giuseppe went scoreless in three appearances.
