The Checkers kicked off the 2012-13 season in giving fashion with “15 Days of Giving," presented by Lowe’s, visits to Extreme Ice Center for youth hockey practice and a special fundraiser by Chubby for Special Olympics North Carolina. More than $17,000 was raised for local non-profit organizations throughout the month.

15 DAYS OF GIVING

Checkers players and staff members contributed more than 400 volunteer hours and $16,000 in monetary and in-kind donations throughout their daily community service program “15 Days of Giving," presented by Lowe’s. The events and fundraisers were held throughout Charlotte and included volunteering at Ronald McDonald House of Charlotte, Classroom Central and the Humane Society of Charlotte, among many more local non-profit organizations.

The program began on Saturday, Oct. 20, with a cornhole tournament at the Gin Mill, benefiting Sidekicks Mentoring, and culminated with a public skate for Special Olympics at Extreme Ice Center on Saturday, Nov. 3. 15 Days of Giving

CHUBBY OVER THE EDGE

Checkers mascot and part-time daredevil Chubby was at it again, this time rappelling down The VUE Charlotte on 5th to raise money and awareness for Special Olympics North Carolina. More than $1,200 was raised for Chubby’s 37-story drop.

11TH ANNUAL GOLF CLASSIC

The Checkers held their 11th annual Charity Golf Classic Oct. 24 at Pine Island Country Club and raised more than $7,000 for Presbyterian Hemby Children’s Hospital and Discovery Place.

YOUTH HOCKEY

Checkers players Michal Jordan, Victor Rask, Rasmus Rissanen and Jeremy Welsh dropped in at youth hockey practices at Extreme Ice Center to help the kids with skills and drills on Tuesday, Oct. 9, and Tuesday, Oct. 16. Victor Rask at Extreme Ice Center
