Last season the Texas Stars posted a 41-29-4-6 record and earned a berth in the Calder Cup Playoffs. After losing in the first round to the Milwaukee Admirals, the Stars retained the majority of their leading point scorers, as well as their leading netminder, from the 2010-11 squad. With a few additions to Texas’ roster, the Stars are poised to finish atop their division and contend for the 2011-12 Calder Cup.
Freshman goaltender Richard Bachman, shined during the Stars’ 2010-11 campaign. The netminder ranked in the top five among AHL goaltenders in every major category, including second among all AHL goalies in minutes played (3,191), second in saves (1,478), third in save percentage (.927), fourth in goals-against average (2.20) and fifth in shutouts (6).
Offensively, the Stars return three of their top four point producers: Travis Morin, Colton Sceviour and Dan Sprang. Morin led all Stars skaters in points during the playoffs, scoring three goals and four assists (7 points) in six playoff games. The center posted a team-high plus-9 rating and led the team with 10 power-play goals. Sceviour added 41 points (16g, 24a) for Texas last season, with one playoff goal. Spang led all Stars’ defenseman in scoring, totaling 37 points (10g, 27a) in 77 games. The blueliner was whistled for only 32 penalty minutes in 2010-11, and posted a plus-5 rating.
To bolster the returning roster, Dallas acquired defenseman Jace Coyle in free agency. Coyle, who skated with the Medicine Hat Tigers last season (WHL), was a point-per-game skater during the playoffs, notching three goals and 12 assists (15 points) in 15 playoff games. The defenseman will be joined by wingers Matt Fraser and Nick Layton. Fraser tallied 74 points (36g, 38a) in 66 games with the Kootenay Ice (WHL) last season, and led the team with 27 points (17g, 10a) in 19 playoff games. In the CHL playoffs, Nick Layton skated in 20 games for the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs, earning 17 points (7g, 10a). The newly-signed duo will provide additional firepower for the playoff run.

The Texas Stars hockey club is currently the top AHL affiliate of the NHL’s Dallas Stars. The club has reached the playoffs in both of its AHL seasons, advancing to the Calder Cup Finals in their inaugural season.
The franchise originated on April 28, 2009, when the AHL granted the Texas Stars limited membership, conditioned on the completed purchase of an existing AHL franchise within one year. On May 4, 2010, the AHL approved the Star’s ownership group’s purchase of the previously-suspended Iowa Chops franchise. The club recorded a 46-27-3-4 record in its first season, advancing to the Calder Cup Final and losing in game six to the Hershey Bears. The Stars again advanced to the playoffs in 2011, but fell in the first round to the Milwaukee Admirals.
Texas and Charlotte will face each other four times in 2011-12, with each team hosting two games in its home arena. Charlotte did not play Texas in its inaugural season.
