SHAYA'S 10 THOUGHTS: OCT. 25

Jason Shaya

1) Unfortunate incident on Saturday night when a fan in section 101 was hit by Matt Hackett’s jock strap after Chris Terry’s shootout move worked perfectly. But, I will say that Hackett is going to be an NHL goalie one day.

2) On Saturday night during CBC’s Hot Stove segment, former NHL general manager Mike Milbury said that he thought the advertisement logos that teams use during their TV broadcasts located on the glass behind the nets (only visible on television) is a bad idea. Ron MacLean, the best studio host in hockey, said he disliked all advertisement signage, even on the dasher boards. Leave it to guys who have never had to generate revenue to suggest advertisements are an excrescence of the business on the grounds of aesthetics. If there ever was an issue everyone in this industry should agree on, it’s that more revenue is better than less. And no, it’s doesn’t come at the expense of credibility. I’m not making a comparison to the European leagues.

3) With Michael Murphy playing very well this weekend and Justin Peters ready to get back, I assume the pressure is on Jeff Daniels to make a decision at some point to play one goalie over the other. Most coaches wouldn’t mind this kind of tough decision.

4) During the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, the Detroit Red Wings selected goaltender Thomas McCollum with the last pick in the first round. The first pick of the second round went to the Florida Panthers, and they selected goaltender Jacob Markstrom. In two NHL games this season, Markstrom has a .959 save percentage and a 1.52 goals-against average. McCollum holds a .886 save percentage and a 3.52 goals-against average in the ECHL. Whoops.

5) I never thought I’d type these words, but you can follow me on twitter this season @Jason_Shaya. I have nothing interesting to say that isn’t about politics but Mike Lappan finally got his wish! By the way, as I understand it, “Shaya’s 10 Thoughts” is now a global phenomenon (@cbo28).

6) Over 29,000 views for our TV broadcast last weekend, with the highest numbers coming from Raleigh yet again. All three games this weekend will be on ahllive.com and on WBCN 1660 AM. You can email or send me a message on twitter during the game.

7) The Checkers are on the road for the next three weeks. Of the nine consecutive games away from home, only two of them are back to back in the same city. The team’s travel itinerary reads like an annoying and inconvenient horror novel.

8) I’ve been waiting on the first road trip to read Edmund Burke’s Reflection on the Revolution in France. Who else is as pumped as I am!?

9) Drayson Bowman with 6 points (4g, 2a) in 7 games with a +4 this season. I think this is the best hockey I’ve seen him play. Scored a huge goal late in the game on Sunday against the Admirals to seal the victory for Charlotte.

10) Which of the struggling NHL teams will be the first to fire their head coach? I know it’s early, but as I’m sure Jean-Paul Marat said many times, sometimes heads have to roll.

10% more thoughts for free:

11) Anyone see the 13 seconds that Rangers head coach John Tortorella gave to reporters after his team lost to Edmonton? There isn’t a single coach in the world that is happy about losing and no matter how it happens, it always leaves you disgusted. But, how about giving the fans a little more and the reporters something else to write about other than coaching outbursts? I still can’t tell if I love this guy or hate him.
