The Carolina Hurricanes’ second trade in three days will result in yet another new addition for the Checkers.
As part of a deal that sent forward Alexei Ponikarovsky to the New Jersey Devils late Friday night, the Carolina organization acquired 6-foot-3, 190-pound defenseman Joe Sova, who had been playing with the AHL’s Albany Devils. Sova, a 23-year-old native of Berwyn, Illinois, is playing his first full professional season following a three-year collegiate career at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks.
In 14 games with Albany, including their 3-2 defeat to Adirondack that immediately preceded the trade, Sova posted 4 points (2g, 2a) and a minus-1 rating with no penalty minutes. He started the season with the ECHL’s Kalamazoo Wings, scoring 7 points (2g, 5a) to go along with a plus-10 rating and 22 penalty minutes in 18 contests.
The undrafted blueliner made his professional debut with Albany last season, recording 4 points (1g, 3a) in 11 contests following the conclusion of his college campaign.
Sova will bolster the Checkers defensive depth that has been hit by recent injuries to Chris Murray and Mathieu Roy. Defenseman Ryan Donald was recalled from the ECHL’s Florida Everblades to give the team six healthy defenseman and made his Checkers debut in Abbotsford on Friday.
Should Sova not make the long trip to Abbotsford to join the team for Saturday’s game, he’s likely to meet the team in Norfolk for their following game on Tuesday. |
