HURRICANES RECALL JEROME SAMSON

One could forgive Jerome Samson for forgetting which team he plays for this week.

The Hurricanes made a transaction involving Samson for the third time in four days Wednesday, this time recalling him to the NHL to play in Friday’s contest against San Jose. After initially joining Carolina on Sunday, Samson rejoined Charlotte after just one game, a scoreless performance in his hometown of Montreal on Monday.

The addition of another forward from Charlotte became necessary due to news that Hurricanes forward Tuomo Ruutu will be sidelined for three weeks with an upper-body injury suffered during the 5-3 win over the Canadiens.

Though the Checkers knew they would be losing a forward to the NHL before they begin a crucial three-in-three set in Peoria on Friday, they nonetheless face some last-minute questions as to whether they’ll need to bring in outside help of their own. In addition to goalie Mike Murphy, four forwards are questionable to make the trip west – a group that includes Chris Durno, Riley Nash, Justin Soryal and Brett Sutter.

Samson, who has 18 goals this season, joins Checkers teammate Drayson Bowman in the NHL. Together, they represent two of the AHL club’s top four goal scorers. Zach Boychuk (13 goals) and Zac Dalpe (12) will lead the team’s offense for the time being.
