The seventh annual “Salute to Heroes” game, presented by American Airlines, will take place Sunday, March 11, when the Checkers host the Chicago Wolves at 3 p.m.
Proceeds from ticket sales, sponsorships and donations will benefit the families of injured and fallen public service workers from the Charlotte Fire Department, Mecklenburg EMS agency, Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department and Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office as well as the Military Family Lifestyle Charitable Foundation. More than $120,000 in gifts and cash has been raised since the event’s inception in 2005-06.
Following the Checkers game will be the annual “Salute to Heroes” hockey game in which members of CMPD and MCSO will take on CFD and MEDIC. At last season’s event, more than 3,000 spectators stayed after the Checkers game to witness a 3-2 CFD/Medic victory. CFD/Medic leads the overall series 4-2.
There will be a pre-game rappel from the rafters by SWAT and CFD members and a CFD Pipe and Drum band performance as well as special tributes to fallen service workers throughout the afternoon.
