Tera Black

Chief Operating Officer/Alternate Governor


Black joined the Checkers as Vice President in September 2006 and was promoted to Chief Operating Officer in 2008. She oversees the day to day business operations of the team with an emphasis on the implementation the team's overall marketing strategy and the integration of all areas of the team's marketing efforts (public relations, community relations, game operations, sales, and involvement with non-profit organizations). Black is also the Alternate Governor for the Checkers.

Black came to the Checkers after serving as the Chief Operating Officer of the ECHL’s San Diego Gulls from July 2003 - July 2006. Black was the first-ever female COO in ECHL history and only the fourth female in the 21 year league history to run an ECHL organization. Currently she is the only female in the ECHL to hold this position.

Under Black’s leadership the Gulls won the ECHL’s Marketing Award and Media Relations Award during the 2005-2006 season. Black was also named the West Coast Hockey League’s Media Director of the Year in 2002-03. Under her direction, the Checkers have won the ECHL’s Excellence in Marketing Awards for each of the last two consecutive seasons (2006-07 and 2007-08).

Black began her career in hockey as the head athletic trainer and director of hockey operations for the Sacramento River Rats of the now defunct Roller Hockey International (RHI). In 1997, after her stint in Sacramento, she was hired as the vice president of hockey operations for the North American Roller Hockey Championships where she remained until joining the Gulls in 2002.

Black holds a bachelor’s of science degree in Kinesiology from San Diego State University. Black resides in Matthews with her husband Jamie and her two daughters.
