Charlotte Checkers Science of Hockey
The Charlotte Checkers’ Science of Hockey program, presented by Piedmont Natural Gas, recently completed its 2018-19 season.

Presented by Piedmont Natural GasOver the course of six programs held at various elementary schools in the Charlotte community, Checkers staff demonstrated how science concepts learned in the classroom, such as the changing states of water, transfer of energy, force and more, apply to the game of hockey. Real-life examples included everything from shooting and passing to ice resurfacing methods.

At each event, students viewed an instructional video and then performed an experiment on force and friction, where they applied their knowledge to make predictions, conclusions and solve for averages.

The Science of Hockey program visits several local schools and reaches hundreds of students each season. As part of the program, teachers receive a full packet of the information covered in the presentation and extended learning material that they can choose to hand out to the students for an extra in class assignment or homework.
