Internships

Internship positions are available each season in our community relations/marketing, corporate partnerships, ticket sales and game operations departments. Internships consist of in-office experience, and interns must be available for all game days. To apply, please visit our Teamwork Online page.

Marketing/Community Relations

The focus of this internship will be to provide an intern with an opportunity to gain experience in all aspects of the Checkers’ marketing and community relations departments. The Checkers marketing internship is a structured opportunity for you to learn, grow, and contribute in a professional setting. The Checkers strive to provide a creative and entertaining platform to reach fans through community initiatives and an affordable-family sporting event.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Assisting in community relations initiatives; generate ideas and programs that increase the team’s overall impact in the community
  • Helping to facilitate off-ice events
  • Fulfilling all donation requests, tracking and managing of donation logs
  • Assisting with the execution of Charlotte Checkers community programs
  • Assisting marketing department in executing promotions, advertising, and events for theme nights including: Pink in the Rink, Race Night, 80’s Night, etc.
  • Work alongside with Merchandise Director for inventory, restocking, game preparation, etc.

Public & Media Relations

The focus of this internship will be to provide an intern with the opportunity to gain experience in aspects of the Checkers’ Public Relations and Communications department. The primary responsibility of this department is to manage the day-to-day communications of the Checkers, including providing regular website content relating to the team and its efforts in the community and promoting stories and events via the team’s various digital properties. The department is also responsible for managing relationships with the media and relating all team news through press releases and social media.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Organizing and labeling game day and event photos
  • Conducting research on social media trends
  • Creating media guide
  • Re-organization of team/player records
  • Creation and day-to-day maintenance of web pages
  • Statistical research and record keeping
  • Editing photos for publishing
  • Updating in-game twitter feed
  • Occasional writing assignments for website
Requirements:
  • Excellent sports and hockey knowledge
  • Excellent verbal communication and written skills

Ticket Sales

The focus of this internship will be to provide an intern with an opportunity to gain experience in all aspects of the Checkers Ticket Sales department. The Ticket Department’s primary responsibilities are generating awareness and interest in Checkers hockey with a focus on selling and servicing individuals and businesses by maintaining relationships, servicing customer requests and ultimately developing strategies that solidify the overall goals and objectives of the ticket sales department. Interns will be in direct contact with current and prospective group, suite, season and partial plan buyers and will learn the importance of selling and servicing both new and renewal business.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Prospecting new business
  • Developing distribution and lead lists
  • Inputting data into the Checkers' database management system
  • Assisting the sales staff with ticket orders via will-call on game day
  • Assisting the sales staff with in arena fan experiences
  • Assisting the service department with the distribution of materials to season ticket holders and group members
  • Make outbound calls to past customers for database generation
  • Represent the Checkers at community and networking events
  • Ability to work nights and weekends

Corporate Partnerships

The focus of this internship will be to provide an intern with the opportunity to gain experience in all aspects of the Checkers Corporate Department. The Corporate Department’s primary responsibility is the execution of corporate partnerships and sponsorships. Interns will have the opportunity to work alongside the corporate sales and servicing team and will be actively involved in the successful execution of the Charlotte Checkers 2013-2014 season.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Attending all Charlotte Checkers home games at Time Warner Cable Arena
  • Capturing pictures for partner’s proof of performance documents
  • Providing hospitality to partners in attendance
  • Conducting market research on other sports organizations and potential sponsorship opportunities
  • Creating proofs of performance for all corporate partners

Game Operations

The focus of this internship will be to provide an intern with an opportunity to gain first-hand experience in game presentation and execution. Interns will have the opportunity to work alongside all departments of the organization and will be actively involved in the successful execution of game days throughout the season.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Help prepare game scripts and PA's
  • Assisting in game day set-up
  • Placing and organizing partner signage
  • Partnership activation including concourse marketing
  • Coordinating intermission activities and promotions: selecting contestants, Zamboni riders, monitoring interactive concourse tables, coordinating group outings etc.
  • Assisting staff with promotional giveaways and couponing initiatives
Requirements:
  • Work all Charlotte Checkers home and playoff games
  • Must be able to life 50lbs
  • Comfortable selecting contestants for activities

Video/Graphic Design/Web Design

The focus of this internship will be to provide an intern with an opportunity to gain experience in video production and graphic design. This is a great opportunity to build a portfolio and learn about current production standards and practices within a sports organization.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Writing, shooting and editing videos
  • Designing internal marketing and print ad material
  • Use of Final Cut Pro 7, After Effects and Photoshop *EXPERIENCE REQUIRED*
